Denali Petroleum and Gas is developing a major natural gas field located in the Susitna Valley, approximately 70 miles from Anchorage, on over 567,000 acres leased from Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources. Per a bankable appraisal done in May 2026 by the by the consulting unit of ASRC Energy Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, the field is estimated to contain 59 Trillion Cubic Feet ("59 TCF") of natural gas resources. At full envisioned field development, this amount of natural gas should be sufficent to serve many customers for well more than a century. The Cook Inlet Gas IPS covers about 9,600,000 acres and comprises the Cook Inlet basin, Matanuska Valley, and Susitna Lowland. All Denali-leased property is located in the Susitna Lowland basin. The USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2012-1545 determined that “The Cook Inlet-Susitna region of south-central Alaska contains large quantities of gas-bearing coal of Tertiary age. The U.S. Geological Survey completed an assessment of undiscovered, technically recoverable coal-bed gas resources underlying the Cook Inlet-Susitna region in 2011, based on the total petroleum system (TPS) concept... The Cook Inlet Coal-Bed Gas TPS encompasses approximately 9,600,000 acres, comprising the Cook Inlet basin, Matanuska Valley, and Susitna Lowland. Wells were drilled in the Susitna Valley during the 1960s and 1980s, revealing a substantial presence of natural gas. However, these wells were abandoned because the operator focused on finding oil. Subsequent studies by both the U.S. Geological Survey and the Alaska Division of Geology & Geological Services further determined that the formations in the region, including the Susitna Basin, are hydrocarbon-bearing strata—geological formations within which gas reserves are commonly discovered.
The analysis of samples from the surrounding wells located in the area of Denali’s leases shows natural gas from the region to be of high quality, high heat value based on 98 to 99 percent Methane (C1) and no indication of sour gas (low sulfur and low CO2), making this gas "sweet" of very high value for local consumption and power, as well as export via LNG. 
Gas produced from this field will be sold to regional Alaskan gas utilities and is expected to help address the current decline in locally available gas supplies. Wells will be drilled and managed by a firm with long experience in the Alaska energy industry, the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation.
